Teaching Licensure & M.A.T. Program
Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution? You can earn teaching licensure and the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) at the same time. This program is ideal for college graduates in many fields who believe teaching is their calling. The first of its kind in the Roanoke Valley, the program offers small, interactive classes as well as hybrid instructional options. Our program faculty are seasoned education leaders who can offer career assistance with job connections in Roanoke and the surrounding region. Plus, Hollins’ student teaching grants make our program unique and affordable.

Degrees Offered
Licensure and M.A.T.
To earn a graduate degree in education, students are required to have 40 credit hours plus student teaching. Students may complete the degree and student teaching within one and a half to two years of full-time studies. The program also accepts part-time students. Faculty teach courses during evenings at times compatible with the average working person’s schedule. Students have five years to meet degree requirements.
Licensure-Only Program
Want to earn licensure to teach in Virginia or other states, but don’t want to pursue an M.A.T.? Hollins’ graduate program in education offers college grads this option. The program’s length depends on the courses needed to meet requirements for a teaching license. The average length of time is three to four semesters, which includes course work and student teaching.
Endorsements Offered
The M.A.T. program offers endorsements in the following areas:
- PK-6
- PK-12: foreign language (French, Latin, Spanish), visual arts
- 6-12: English, history and social sciences, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics
Federal Teach Grant
Hollins is pleased to announce our participation in the Federal TEACH Grant Program which began with the 2014-15 academic year. This non-need based award provides up to $4,000 in grant funding per year to students who plan to become teachers, and meet the requirements.
Hollins Student Teaching Grant
Through the Hollins student teaching grant, students enrolled in the 12-credit student teaching course receive a $5,100 grant to cover the cost of those credits.

Meet the Director
Lorraine Lange is the director of the M.A.L.S., M.A.T., and M.A. in Teaching and Learning graduate programs; Ed.D., Virginia Tech; M.A.L.S., Hollins College; B.A., Roanoke College
Lange is the former superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools. Lange was named the Virginia Superintendent of the Year in 2011 and was selected as one of four finalists for National Superintendent in 2012. She was a named a “Tech-Savvy Superintendent” by E-News. She also received the Virginia Excellence in Education Award from AdvancED. Locally, Lange was named Citizen of the Year by the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce and was given the Art Venture Award at the Taubman Museum of Art.
